This sign refers to the previous population of just the Tehachapi City area, within its borders of approximately 10 square miles. The population of Tehachapi City proper was 14,414 at the 2010 census

However, the "Greater Tehachapi area" is a very large and sprawling area consisting of nearly 48,000 residents within approximately 275 square miles. There are rolling hills, thousands of oak and pine trees, many Valleys, streams, several lakes, awesome views, scenery and wonderful recreational activities. You just have to explore!
